Itaipu Binacional

One of the main tourist attractions of Foz de Iguaçu, the Itaipu Dam is the largest in energy operation in the world and the second largest in size, second only to another hydroelectric plant built in China. The Itaipu hydroelectric plant has a dam 2.5 kilometers long and 196 meters high.

There are three ways to get to know the plant. The simplest is the Panoramic Tour, which includes an explanatory video and a bus ride over the dam, with a stop at the viewpoint. A tip is to combine the tour with the Kattamarã tour of Itaipu lake. The Special Circuit, longer and more detailed, takes you inside the plant until you reach one of its turbines; and Night Visit (only on Fridays and Saturdays), when the entire dam structure is illuminated in a project signed by Peter Gasper and accompanied by music.
Other attractions are the Refugio Ecologico Bela Vista, created to receive the animals stranded by the construction of Lake Itaipu, with species such as the broad-snouted caiman and more than 900 types of plants; and the test drive in the electric car, which follows the same route as the panoramic tour (forbidden for under 18s).
